exercise A/B/C

This painting is part of the biggest and most important project I’ve ever completed to date (i.e. HSC body of work for V.A.) To my teachers’ dismay, the bulk of the painting was completed in the space of about two weeks.
Painting the series of portraits (of which there were 9) taught me two things;
1) Pressure does nothing to inspire creativity
2) Do not underestimate the value of quality materials. For some reason which is completely lost upon me now, I’d opted for cheap acrylics vs. artist quality oils, now my preferred medium

Sagrada Familia by Antoni Gaudi in Barcelona, Spain
As uninformed as my opinion may be (although I am in the great company of George Orwell), I find this building to be one of the ugliest structures to ever come into existence. If I were to get into everything that I dislike about this building, we would never arrive at the heart of this paragraph, so, retuning to the principle purpose of this paragraph- I was inspired by this building to become an architect in order to have the tools to make an equally as grandiose statement about my idea of beauty, if only to counteract the ugliness of this church. I suppose you could say that I was inspired by it’s ability to arouse such an intense emotion (though probably not the one Gaudi was aiming for) in me.

This picture was taken in the beautiful, sprawling city of La Paz which is the highest capital city in the world existing at an altitude of approximately 4500 meters about sea level at a local event taking place every weekend. This photo is representative of that which I find beautiful- the existence of a diversity of peoples in the world, the complete and utter difference between the way we live our life and theirs.

The Slip- Sidney Nolan 1947
unforgiving/frame/remember

Nolan worked primarily with enamel and composition board. I'm unfamiliar with these mediums, although I fail to see how it would differ too greatly from oil on canvas- hence i Imagine that from his imagination *as painting a falling horse from life would pose quite the challenge* Nolan painted this particular scene. Perhaps he did studies of similar landscapes in order to achieve true-to-life colouring, or scale. Although, the painting is not uber-representational, which leads me to believe that Nolan painted primarily by instinct.

History of Holding- Ricky Swallow 2007
tender/fairytale/touch

Quite obviously, Swallow constructed this work of wood. I like to imagine he carved with with his own hands and the most primary of tools. This seems the most likely of options, as I've not yet heard of wood-cutting laser. I'm also assuming that obsessive planning went into the creation of this art-work. Swallow probably drew numerous sketches in order to realise a three-dimensional sculpture. I like to imagine that swallow found this particular piece of wood himself. Perhaps he already know what he would make, or perhaps he has the piece of wood lying around until this particular concept occurred to him.
